Although Dalbeattie town itself is only about 200 years old, the area surrounding the town dates back to the iron age. For example did you know that the Moyle is not only a popular route on the 7stanes course but in fact was the tribal seat of the Novantae tribe that ruled over Galloway? If you have ever watched 'Time Team' and thought that archaeology looked fun then the Newbarns Dig is the perfect place for you to have a go.

Or that at Buittle there was once a castle to rival that of Caerlaverock, which belonged to Scotland's wronged king John Balliol, before being destroyed by King Robert the Bruce and his brother? Or follow the River Urr until you come to the point where it meets Dalbeattie Burn and you will find the Dub o' Hass.  Did you know that Edingham is one of the oldest place names in the whole of Scotland, once famous for its religious connections in the 8th Century? Nowadays it is better known for having been a World War II Munitions Factory.
